Animal Collective
Campfire Songs
Jan. 26 street date. Paw Tracks is proud to present the reissue of Animal Collective’s 2003 album Campfire Songs. Since the CD’s original issue on Catsup Plate recently went out of print it is our intention to simply keep the cd in print for as long as possible. An idea originally thought up by Dave Portner and Noah Lennox while in college, Campfire Songs is not a record of songs sung around a campfire but a record that hints at songs emerging from the fire itself: “We wanted to give the music the feeling and atmosphere of the outdoors and the warmth of a fire, so people could bring it indoors.” A collection of five songs written over a period of four to five years, Campfire Songs is an escape from the clutter and electronic assault of the group’s 2001 release Danse Manatee and the tour that preceded it. However, the tapestry quality of the songs and the lines that blur endings from beginnings and jams from compositions highlight a style that the boys had become comfortable with from touring and would continue to work on in the years that followed on records like Here Comes The Indian and Feels. While the songs were completed in the apartment that three of the members shared (Geologist does not play on this album) they chose to record the music on a screened-in porch in Maryland using portable mini disc players so as to allow the ambience of trees blowing in the wind, the birds chirping and the insects in the area to become an integral part of the sound flow. What remains intact are the melodies that have always been a part of the AC sound—though here they have been stripped away of any electronic accompaniment and stretched and slowed to a calmer place than anywhere AC had been before and perhaps has gone since.

Codeine Velvet Club
s/t
January  19th street date. Codeine Velvet Club is the side project from Fratellis main man, Jon Lawler. Finding himself with a slew of new songs and a new friendship with Glaswegian singer Lou Hickey, Jon decided to put together a bigger, more expansive band for his new compositions. Featuring vocals from both Jon and Lou, and produced by (Fratellis debut album) Costello Music producer Tony Hoffer the new album should surprise and delight in equal measure.

King Midas Sound
Waiting For You
After two singles on Hyperdub and a release on Soul Jazz, King Midas Sound's ‘Waiting For You’ is the debut album from Roger Robinson and Kevin Martin's new group. In previous collaborations, Roger performed as a highly respected poet, but when he opened his mouth to sing in a fragile falsetto (a sound somewhere between Gregory Issacs and Vincent Gallo), everything changed and King Midas Sound was born. The signature intensity of their previous solo projects remains, but the mood and feeling is radically different. As opposed to Roger's spoken word pronouncements and The Bug's fierce battleground dancehall, King Midas Sound is more like an opiated aftermath. Instead of hyperemotional haunted garage, ‘Waiting’ is absolutely song based, and generates the spectral bliss of a jilted lovers rock, a sublime, heartbreak reggae.

"With its existential, post-millennial dread, King Midas Sound is a brave new dawn for dub-wise music.  Let the golden years commence..."

Newsom, Joanna
Have One On Me (3CD)
Feb. 23 street date. JOANNA NEWSOM releases her first full-length album since late 2006's 'Ys', making up for lost time with a disc for 2008, one for 2009 and one for today - yes, folks, a TRIPLE CD/LP! Featuring Ryan Francesconi and Neal Morgan from Joanna's Ys Street Band, the highly aniticpated 'Have One On Me' is an extravagantly packaged (and extravagantly nicely-priced) collection of fantastic new Joanna Newsom songs - her most colorful record to date.

NOFX
Cokie The Clown (EP)
Continually bucking convention and invariably doing things their own way, NOFX are once again defying the norm. Recently, when the band recorded their latest full-length, 'Coaster', they ended up with five too many songs to fit on the album. Instead of embracing the traditional approach of releasing the extra songs as a teaser in order to promote their then upcoming full-length, NOFX opted to save five of the best songs from the session and release them months later as an EP titled 'Cokie The Clown'. 'Cokie The Clown' is sort of the crème brulee to the filet mignon that is 'Coaster'; an irresistibly tempting and equally satisfying final course. The songs on 'Cokie' are everything that loyal fans have come to expect and crave, with fast riffs, catchy melodies, and thought provoking lyrics. It pretty much goes without saying that this EP will be gobbled up by the thousands of adoring NOFX fans.

She And Him
Volume Two
March 23 street date. SHE & HIM are actress Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward; hearing them again on 'Volume Two' feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But as with 2008's 'Volume One', the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic. She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings-attached collaboration on 'Volume One' has evolved into a bona fide touring band, and She & Him are here to stay.

Socialybrium
For You-For Us-For All
Jan. 19 street date. Throughout the '70s, BERNIE WORRELL's keyboard wizardry for Parliament/Funkadelic was a huge part of timeless hits as "Flash Light" and "One Nation Under A Groove", and since then he's been a session fixture on key albums by Talking Heads, the Pretenders, Keith Richards, Yoko Ono, Mos Def, Deee-Lite, Public Image Ltd., Bill Laswell and scores more. His latest excursion is at the helm of an urban funk-rock fusion supergroup dubbed SociaLybrium, with former P-Funk All-Stars guitar guru Blackbyrd McKnight, New York bassist and producer Melvin Gibbs, and veteran drummer J.T. Lewis. The album is a communal trip where four high-caliber musicians can jam together on equal footing, but also where the listener is encouraged to join in the fray. Call it freestyle Afro-fusion, electric church music, or gutbucket street funk - however you slicie it, SociaLybrium can get DOWN in any style, at any given moment.

Spoon
Transference
Jan. 19 street date. 'Transference' is the first full-length offering of new SPOON material since 2007's 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga', Spoon's first U.S. Top 10 album. Produced by the band, 'Transference' is made up of 11 new gems that honor the Spoon tradition while pushing the envelope of the band's sound ever further. 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga' was hailed upon its release with the band's biggest ever coverage in the likes of TIME and THE NEW YORKER, and wound up 2007 with year-end best of accolades from NPR, GQ, ROLLING STONE, PITCHFORK, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, SPIN, THE ONION, PASTE and the WASHINGTON POST, while Oct. 6, 2007 marked the band’s debut appearance on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.

T-Model Ford
The Ladies Man
Jan. 12 street date. On July 22, 2008, James "T-Model" Ford stepped into Planet Paul Studios in Wichita, KS at the end of his first formal tour in years. T wanted to play acoustic guitar and have 100% control over the record, so everyone agreed he should do it the way he wanted. The engineer simply let the tapes roll & T Model made it look easy. One song after another just rolled out of him. 'The Ladies Man' is the product of this afternoon session in Wichita. This is pure T-Model, with some newer young musician friends playing along with him. It is also the only acoustic album T has ever recorded and it's a blast! At 88 years old, he appeared younger and livelier than many folks a fraction of his age and this amazing record is the proof.

5 Years Of Hyperdub (2CD)
Pitchfork (8.2-"Best new music") - "Hyperdub is usually cited as dubstep's most prominent and progressive label, but it's hard to even call most of their releases dubstep, strictly speaking. They've released off-centered hip-hop (Flying Lotus), brooding chill-out music that recasts the chill-out room as a bunker (Kode9 & the Spaceape), and misfit rave music (Zomby). Hyperdub's sound isn't dubstep, it's urban noir in the 21st century, or at least how the 21st century looked in 1970s science fiction: A procession of florescent signs over an empty street. 5: Five Years of Hyperdub-- their first CD compilation-- has the tall task of trying to anthologize the label without making it seem like they've run out of ideas. Their solution is sensible: One disc of new material; one disc of classics. Like any label compilation, 5 functions as a kind of mission statement: Here's what we've done; here's what we do. Most of the music on it sounds made for the head, not the feet. In a way, it's like a modern analog to Warp's 1992 compilation, Artificial Intelligence, whose sleeve was a picture of an empty armchair in a living room-- electronic music that has a place in the home".

Good God! Born Again Funk
Jan. 26 street date. The Numero Group's 2006 release 'Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal' examined what seemed to be a conundrum: gospel singers performing pious gospel songs, and devoutly, but doing so amid hot, sweaty, earthy sounds drunk on the same moonshine downed by any blues singer thumbing his way up north from the Mississippi delta. If the central premise was to grapple with a "funky" trend in gospel, forgive them for staring perhaps a bit too intently at the collision of sacred and profane they thought we saw on those LPs and 45s. This music was always sacred, and decidedly so. Four years later, Numero returns with not quite a New Testament, rather a re-examination of a weighty tome. 'Born Again Funk' lends new ears to a joyful strain of American composers and performers unafraid of expressing their devotion with both inspiration and invention. They were faithful to a spirit, not to an ordained sound.
