Aksak Maboul [Un Peu de L'ame de Bandits]

February 23 street date (date change). Originally released in January 1980, the second album from (Crammed founder) Marc Hollander’s band was more intense and experimental than Aksak Maboul’s debut album, yet often as playful. Containing complex written sections, free improv, and a wild variety of elements, Bandits was recorded with a band comprising revered UK musicians Fred Frith & Chris Cutler, and is described by All Music Guide as “a pinnacle of the RIO movement” (RIO being Rock In Opposition, the late-‘70s radical, pan-European coalition of bands, of which Aksak Maboul was part). The album reached #3 in the NME’s top ten European albums of 1980 (after Yello and The Nits, before Steve Reich and Faust!). For this reissue, the album was remastered from original analogue tapes, and includes a booklet with abundant liner notes, documents, and recollections by all the participants. (Yet to be verified, but we heard rumour that the album includes a bonus download and possibly CD for previously unreleased recordings entitled "Before and After Bandits".. But we'll believe it when we see it!! )
Cindy Lee [Act Of Tenderness (Incl. Download)]

New street date: March 9. Cindy Lee is the diva alter-ego of singer / guitarist / drag queen Patrick Flegel, the one-time captain of heralded Canadian experimental guitar pop act, Women. In Flegel’s working on / as Cindy Lee exclusively over recent years, their songwriting makes a move toward high atmospherics, often achieving a mysterious sweetness rooted equally in beauty and ache. As Cindy Lee’s first long-form statement, Act Of Tenderness makes use of antipodal themes to create a living sound: static with grace, distortion and sugar, all masterfully arranged with crooked nods toward pop classicism. The layered vocal on “Power And Possession” creates a palpable haunt, bringing historical girl-group lament to choir-esque heights. The feedback shriek and industrial grind of “Bonsai Garden” provides near-operatic damage, yet never stumbles into the irrevocably grave. These snowy pieces give the album a decidedly cinematic feel, albeit one bent more towards Eraserhead. Originally released in a scant private edition in 2015, Superior Viaduct’s imprint W.25TH is pleased to give Act Of Tenderness its deserving wide release.
Dane, Barbara [Hot Jazz, Cool Blues & Hard Hitting Songs (2CD)]

February 16 street date. This 2 CD retrospective reflects over 60 years of Barbara Dane’s eclectic musical history in folk, blues and jazz. The 39 tracks include 13 never-before-released recordings, featuring collaborations with Lightin’ Hopkins, the Chambers Brothers, Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon, Art Hodes, and more. The extensive liner notes give insight into Dane’s singular trajectory as an outspoken and indomitable artist who, unwilling to make the compromises demanded by the music business, struck out on her own path, singing for peace and social justice.
Dane, Barbara & The Chambers Brothers [Barbara Dane & the Chambers Brothers]

February 16 street date. During the Civil Rights Movement, activist singer Barbara Dane collaborated with the then up-and-coming quartet The Chambers Brothers to record a powerful politically charged gospel and rock album that spoke directly to the issues of the day. The vinyl reissue of Barbara Dane and the Chambers Brothers, which includes a liner note booklet and digital download, is part of Folkways Records’ 70th anniversary celebration series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label. The vinyl album is also the companion piece to a new Barbara Dane retrospective: Hot Jazz, Cool Blues and Hard-Hitting Songs (also available February 16, 2018).
Dungen & Woods [Myths 003 (Ltd)]

March 16 street date. (Very limited!!.. Pre-orders due ASAP!!) For the third Marfa Myths release, we’re proud to present seven all-new songs written and recorded by Stockholm’s psychedelic masters Dungen and adventurous Brooklyn indie-folk pioneers Woods. In the case of Dungen and Woods, the two bands were tourmates in the summer of 2009, traversing America and bonding with one another in the process. The familiarity with one another’s music and personalities was already well in place, but the eight years that passed between the tour and the making of this record reveal that nothing was lost in the interim. That this is the most music assembled for a Marfa Myths release to date is telling of a rare and special connection between Dungen and Woods, reignited by the circumstances of the occasion. Myths 003 showcases a seamless merging of two bands following the same track to different locations throughout their career, as if they’d been playing together for decades, an exhilarating and buoyant example of how shared experiences can foster truly wonderful music.
Felt [Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty (remastered/gatefold)]

February 23 street date. During the 1980's, FELT made ten albums and ten singles for the Cherry Red and Creation labels. This beautifully produced series examines the work of one of the greatest underground groups of modern times. Their debut album, "Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty" was originally issued in 1982 on the Cherry Red label. Band leader Lawrence's ambition was to release the best debut English album ever! Adrian Borland offered his services, then commitments with his band The Sound prevented this from happening. So Felt began a relationship with Swell Maps producer John A. Rivers. Recorded and mixed in six days the band got a taste of how bitter reality fares compared to the "mellow fruitfulness" of blind ambition. At long last, Cherry Red is now reissuing a deluxe, remastered vinyl edition, packaged in a beautiful gatefold sleeve.

Guided By Voices [Ogre’s Trumpet (Live) (2LP)]

March 9 street date. Limited edition (1000 copies of each format) double album from a magical night in Asbury Park, New Jersey in August 2017. The incendiary new GBV line-up of Robert Pollard, Doug Gillard, Kevin March, Mark Shue and Bobby Bare Jr. play songs from the 2017 albums How Do You Spell Heaven and August By Cake, along with a healthy dose of GBV classics and a The Monkees cover to boot. Excellent sound recording and the band’s performance smokes all the GBV bootlegs.
Last Gang [Keep Them Counting]

March 9 street date. "Keep Them Counting" gives fans a full serving of what was teased by THE LAST GANG's Fat Wreck debut 7". The opening track "Sing For Your Supper" rips right out of the gate with an infectious chorus that is an ear worm for the ages. That is only the beginning of what this debut album has to offer. February 16 street date. Originally released in 1992, this is a highly sought after fourth studio album from genre-leading giants… Napalm Death. The first album to feature drummer Danny Herrera on drums after the departure of Mick Harris. A totally revamped sound from the first two records (Scum & FETO). Harmony Corruption sees an evolution away from grindcore and blast beats towards a more expansive death metal sound. Recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida famed for the recording of many classic death metal albums. Includes fan favourite ‘Suffer The Children’.

"In Absentia" was PORCUPINE TREE's seventh studio album, first released in 2002, and was the first in a run of 3 albums that for many represent the pinnacle of the band's artistic achievements. It was something of a breakthrough for the band, selling three times more than previous releases. Following on from 2000's "Lightbulb Sun", it had a distinctly heavier tone, partly due to the addition of legendary drummer Gavin Harrison, and was also their first for major label Lava/Atlantic Records. It has been unavailable on vinyl for many years. For the first time since its original release, the album has been remastered by PT songwriter and frontman, Steven Wilson. Promise Ring [30 Degrees Everywhere]

March 9 street date. One of the most beloved underground rock acts of the ’90s, it’s nearly impossible to oversell the profound influence The Promise Ring had on their genre’s past, present and future. Formed in 1995 in Milwaukee by guitarist Jason Gnewikow, drummer Dan Didier and bassist Scott Beschta, the band was eventually rounded out by frontman Davey von Bohlen, who at the time was a new enlistee into Midwest darlings Cap’n Jazz, but gave The Promise Ring their crucial missing piece. In 1996, the group signed with Jade Tree and released their debut, 30 Degrees Everywhere: a powerful introduction that distilled the spirit and vigor of some of the members’ punk and hardcore backgrounds and spit-shined it with von Bohlen’s tastefully angsty melodicism. But 30 Degrees Everywhere is deceptively complex, masked by layers of driving guitars and buoyant rhythms. It’s also deceptively dark, as the singer’s heart-on-sleeve lyrics — tackling love, loss, regret and disappointment — and emotive delivery were hallmarks of The Promise Ring’s genre-leading sound. This raw emotion, along with an overall lack of polish, ultimately gives the album an endearing personality. You won’t find perfect performances here; rather, you’re getting real songs about real life played by real people in real time. Boiled down, 30 Degrees Everywhere is the foundation of a musical legacy, a lightning-in-a-bottle musical moment that demands listeners pay attention to its urgency and passion – in the end, what more could you ask for?
Rezillos [Flying Saucer Atttack: The Complete Recordings 1977-1979 (2CD)]

February 23 street date. Formed in 1976 in Edinburgh, Scotland, John Peel favourites THE REZILLOS were viewed as a punk act simply because they emerged at a specific time in the history of rock. But there was so much more to The Rezillos and their music. Branding themselves a "new wave beat group", The Rezillos' music lacked the nihilism and social commentary of many of their counterparts, replacing this with an irreverent glam rock image and a love of science fiction, B-movie, comic book and campy girl group iconography that set them apart from their musical peers. Initially performing mainly 50's and 60's rock 'n' roll covers at their live shows, they began penning their own original songs, and soon after came the release of their highly acclaimed debut LP, "Can't Stand The Rezillos", contained here. This classic album is now available in this collectable 2CD digipack release, together with their famous live recording from the Glasgow Apollo on 23rd December 1978 - released at the time under the name of "Mission Accomplished - But The Beat Goes On:. The package also includes all the B-sides and rarities from the band’'s first stint as The Rezillos between 1977 and 1979.

Simply Saucer [Cyborgs Revisited (2LP/Download w/ bonus track)]

March 9 street date. Expanded 2LP deluxe reissue of the sci-fi proto-punk classic from 1974-1975!! Simply Saucer’s Cyborgs Revisited is an explosive time capsule from one of the great Canadian cult rock ‘n’ roll groups. Formed in Hamilton, Ontario, these sci-fried proto-punks created a sound fusing Hawkwind, The Kinks, Pink Fairies, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, and the omnipresent Velvet Underground. Originally recorded from 1974-1975, the album became a critically revered classic when it was finally unearthed in 1989 by Mole Records. Now, In The Red is proud to release the definitive, remastered double album edition featuring new liner notes by band biographer Jesse Locke, unseen images, and the complete live recordings available as a second LP for the first time ever. Their first recording session took place in the basement of brothers Bob and future superstar producer Daniel Lanois and was initiall intended as a demo. Naturally, interest was non-existent for the sneering six-song set. It’s shocking how anyone could have overlooked “Bullet Proof Nothing”, an undeniably catchy VU-swiping anthem for the used, abused, and confused. At long lost and at the top of this towering stack, In The Red’s expanded reissue of Cyborgs Revisited gives the Canadian cult classic the deluxe treatment it so greatly deserves.
Spacemen 3 [Dreamweapon (2LP/Download)]

Please note: new street date is March 9. August 1988, SPACEMEN 3 embark on one of the strangest events in the band’s already strange history. Billed as "An Evening Of Contemporary Sitar Music" (although consciously omitting the sitar), the group would play in the foyer of Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford, Middlesex to a largely unsuspecting and unsympathetic audience waiting to take their seats for Wim Wenders' film "Wings Of Desire". Spacemen 3's proceeding set, 45 minutes of repetitive drone-like guitar riffs, could be seen as the "Sweet Sister Ray" of 80s Britain. Their signature sound is at once recognizable and disorienting - pointing as much to the hypnotic minimalism of La Monte Young as to a future shoegaze constituency. On this double LP reissue, "Dreamweapon" is augmented by studio sessions and rehearsal tapes from 1987 that would lead up to the recording of the band's classic "Playing With Fire" album. "Spacemen Jam", featuring Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce on dual guitar, is a side-long mediation on delicate textures and psychedelic effects. Includes download card and new insert with liner notes.
Superchunk [What A Time To Be Alive]

February 16 street date. Indeed, like so much of Superchunk’s music in the band’s nearly three decades together, the songs on What a Time to Be Alive meet rage and anxiety head-on with the catharsis and exhilaration of loud punk fire and vulnerable pop energy. Like 2013’s I Hate Music, which focused on death, loss, and the role of music in an aging life, the new record brings spirit to the frontlines of pain—it’s as defiant as it is despairing, as much a call to arms as a throwing up of hands. The record features more guest backing vocalists than any previous Superchunk album, including Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit), Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields), Skylar Gudasz, and David Bazan. “Part of that was wanting a feeling of community,” says Mac. “I think that’s important to not be completely bummed out about everything all the time.”
Thorn, Tracey [Record]

March 2 street date. As ever, the personal has often been political in Tracey Thorn’s work. Across four decades, her songs and writing have offered up a clear-eyed woman’s view of the immediate world around her, from the acerbic teen love songs of her first early ’80s band Marine Girls through sixteen years as one-half of articulate multimillion-selling duo Everything But The Girl, to her recent acclaimed memoirs and journalism. Ewan Pearson peppers the album with fizzing analogue synths and smart mirror-ball beats. For all its no-fuss pop brevity, the album revolves around “Sister,” a dubby nine-minute Compass Point-style disco jam featuring an all-female crew as Tracey is backed by Warpaint’s rhythm section and joined by Corinne Bailey Rae on glorious backing vocals. And yes, of course, that voice: self-assured and richly textured, yet confessional and affecting, it spits out the lyrics on Record with a fresh compelling drive. It remains one of the finest female pop voices of the last four decades.
Titus Andronicus [A Productive Cough]

March 2 street date. CD & Download include the additional track (I’m) Like a Rolling Stone, listed between tracks Crass Tattoo & Home Alone. Since debuting in 2008, Titus Andronicus [hereafter +@] has been conditioning faithful listeners to expect only the unexpected. With A Productive Cough, +@ has executed the most shocking departure yet— but only if, as ever mercurial singer-songwriter Patrick Stickles insists, “you haven’t been paying attention.” In a move that may infuriate the black-denim-and-PBR set, A Productive Cough sets aside leadfooted punk anthems in favor of a subtler, more spacious approach that pushes Stickles’ soul-baring songwriting to the fore, creating an intimacy between artist and audience with which previous +@ efforts had only flirted. “[+@] records have always had their fair share of ballads,” Stickles explains, “but they were always buried amidst a lot of screaming. Now, they are the cornerstones. Punk rock is nice, but it is but one tool in the toolbox from which I pull to achieve my artistic purpose, and that purpose has always been communication and validation.” A Productive Cough was recorded by longtime +@ producer Kevin McMahon at Marcata Recording in New Paltz, NY, with a cast of 21 elite musicians whose diverse skill sets allow +@ to incorporate far-reaching musical styles. Even amongst veteran pianist Rick Steph (Cat Power, Lucero, Hank Williams Jr.) and esteemed cellist Jane Scarpantoni (R.E.M., Bob Mould, Lou Reed), listeners may be most struck by lead vocals from Brooklyn singer Megg Farrell for the aging-punk’s lament “Crass Tattoo,” as the perennially raspy Stickles humbly steps away from the microphone to enable what may be +@’s most unapologetically gorgeous track yet.
V/A [When The Day Is Done: The Orchestrations Of Robert Kirby]

March 2 street date. 20 track compilation featuring the works of ROBERT KIRBY, whose string, brass and woodwind arrangements helped to make Nick Drake's first two albums (as well as many others) so distinctive. Totemic of a post-60s, post-swinging England that wore a greatcoat and kicked up leaves, Kirby's orchestrations were relaxed, familiar, and entirely autumnal. His talent was appreciated by producer/manager Sandy Robertson, who booked him for other prime British folk-rockers - Ian Matthews, Spirogyra, Shelagh McDonald, Keith Christmas - and by Joe Boyd, who asked Kirby to work with Vashti Bunyan. By the end of the decade, when he quit arranging for an office job, there was almost no-one in the folk rock canon Robert Kirby hadn't worked with: Shirley Collins, Ralph McTell, Sandy Denny, and Richard and Linda Thompson. He came out of retirement at the end of the 90s and had never been busier than he was at the time of his unexpected death in 2009. "When The Day Is Done" concentrates on his first wave of success, when a Robert Kirby arrangement was a guarantee of something special, a particular melancholic beauty.
Waits, Tom [Closing Time (remastered)]

March 9 street date. Closing Time is the debut record of Tom Waits and it foreshadows the distinctly lyrical storytelling and original blending of jazz, blues and folk styles that would come to be associated with the artist. Waits performs enduring classics of his career such as Ol’ 55 (covered by the Eagles), the heartbreaking “Martha” and the gentle acoustic folk of “I Hope I Don’t Fall In Love With You”.
