January 15 street date. Mary Timony's debut solo album, "Mountains", is the latest entry in Matador Records' Revisionist History series. The album comes back to us as a gold foil-embossed gatefold double album and includes the previously unreleased original takes of "Return to Pirates," "Poison Moon," and "Killed by the Telephone," which were delivered along with the original master tapes 20 years ago, but were omitted from the final album. The record, remastered by Bob Weston, is completed by a newly recorded orchestral version of "Valley of One Thousand Perfumes" produced by composer Joe Wong (Russian Doll, Midnight Gospel) and mixed by Dave Fridmann. At the turn of the century, Timony (Ex Hex, Wild Flag, Hammered Hulls) was already a celebrated presence in American underground music - a fixture of D.C. and Boston rock 'n' roll via her work in Autoclave and Helium respectively. "Mountains" found Timony dialing into territory that was barer and more confessional than her work in Helium. Stark arrangements were augmented with newly ornate instrumentation - piano, vibraphone, and viola - and the lyrics were tinted with slyly occult imagery.

For more than 30 years, singer-songwriter and guitar hero Mary Timony has cut a distinctive path through the world of independent music, most recently as vocalist and guitarist of acclaimed garage-pop power trio Ex Hex but also as a member of seminal postpunk band Autoclave, celebrated leader of the deeply influential Helium, multifaceted solo artist, and a co-founder of supergroup Wild Flag. Described by Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein as "Mary Shelley with a guitar" and dubbed "a trailblazer and an innovator" by Lindsey Jordan aka Snail Mail, Timony has distinguished herself as one of her generation's most influential. Her fifth solo album, "Untame the Tiger", approaches these emotions head on. Her first solo release in 15 years is a startling document of an artist fully coming into her own power during the fourth decade of her career. It is the product of lessons learned during life-altering struggle. The mystical, acoustic-driven "Untame the Tiger" emerged after the dissolution of a long-term relationship and was bookended by the deaths of Timony's father and mother. The tectonic psychic shift Mary experienced due to this loss informs many of her lyrics. "Untame the Tiger" picks up the thread woven through Timony's freak-folk-anticipating solo albums of the early 00s. Basic tracks were recorded at Studio 606 in Los Angeles, with Timony backed by Dave Mattacks, drummer of legendary British folk-rock band Fairport Convention.
Merge Records was started in the summer of 1989, by Laura Ballance & Mac McCaughan, the same summer they formed the band Superchunk in Chapel Hill, NC. The first couple releases were cassettes (remember those?), by WWAX and Bricks, followed by the first Superchunk (then known only as "Chunk") 7" single. The vinyl 7" was the format of choice for the first 3 years of the label, with cash borrowed from friends to finance projects (including singles from Erectus Monotone, Angels of Epistemology, and more Superchunk) and bedrooms serving as Merge HQ until 1992, when the first Merge full-length release, Tossing Seeds by Superchunk, was released on CD, LP, and cassette. With this release Merge also forged a relationship with Touch and Go Records of Chicago, who have done an admirable job manufacturing and distributing the bulk of Merge's full-length releases since then. Since '92 Merge moved from one charming-yet-run-down office to another until 2001, when we finally made the move from Chapel Hill down the road to a fine old building all our own in historic Downtown Durham, NC. In 2004 Merge Records is celebrating its 15th birthday, and while our roster has changed, rotated, permutated and expanded over the last 15 years, the quality we look for in records as fans is still there in the music we put out on Merge.
